Joni Mitchell delivered a rare and deeply personal speech at the 2026 Juno Awards, reflecting on her health recovery and how she rebuilt her life “like a phoenix.”
The 82-year-old icon was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award on Sunday 29 March 2026 at the TD Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario. The award was presented by Mark Carney on behalf of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS).
Joni Mitchell returns to Canada for major honour
Opening her speech, Mitchell spoke about returning to Canada after spending decades living in the United States.
“We are so lucky… We are so fortunate to have him… I’m living in the States, and you know what’s happening there.”
Her remarks were directed toward Carney, reflecting on her perspective as someone based in the U.S. but honoured on home soil.
Reflecting on health struggles and recovery
Mitchell also addressed the life-changing brain aneurysm she suffered in March 2015, which led to a long period away from public life.
“I had a (brain) aneurysm, which changed my life – oddly, for the better,”
“I went into a coma, which helped me to quit smoking. And my house filled up with the most wonderful nurses. I was on the road with men for years and years; now I live with a house full of women… So, my life has changed for the better out of a catastrophe like a phoenix. Thank you very much for this honour.”
The speech offered a rare insight into her recovery and how the experience reshaped her day-to-day life.
Live performance closes tribute moment
Following the award presentation, Mitchell returned to the stage to perform her 1970 classic Big Yellow Taxi alongside Sarah McLachlan and Allison Russell.
The performance formed part of a wider tribute medley celebrating her career and influence.
A rare honour in Juno Awards history
Mitchell becomes only the third recipient of the Juno Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award. Previous honourees include Pierre Juneau in 1989 and Anne Murray in 2025.
The recognition places her among a small group acknowledged for shaping Canadian music at the highest level.
