Oasis have made UK chart history after (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? was officially named the biggest studio album of all time in the UK as the Official Albums Chart celebrates its 70th anniversary.
The landmark ranking, published on 22 July 2026, places the band’s classic 1995 album at Number 3 overall, behind only two greatest hits collections. That makes it the highest-ranked studio album ever in the history of the UK albums chart.
Morning Glory becomes the UK’s biggest studio album
According to the Official Charts Company, (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? has accumulated 6.2 million UK chart units, boosted by renewed interest following Oasis’ hugely successful reunion in 2025.
Although it sits third in the overall list, the two albums above it are compilation releases, meaning Morning Glory is now officially recognised as the UK’s biggest studio album.
Oasis also place another album in the all-time Top 70, with their 1994 debut Definitely Maybe ranked at Number 39.
Queen and ABBA lead the overall rankings
The all-time Top 5 albums are:
- Queen – Greatest Hits (7.8 million UK chart units)
- ABBA – Gold: Greatest Hits (7.1 million)
- Oasis – (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? (6.2 million)
- Adele – 21 (5.7 million)
- The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (5.6 million)
Adele’s 21 remains the best-selling album of the 21st century in the UK and the highest-ranked album by a female artist.
British artists dominate the charts
British acts account for half of the all-time Top 10, with albums by Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Oasis, Adele and The Beatles all featuring among the country’s biggest sellers.
Elsewhere in the Top 70, Ed Sheeran is represented by three albums, led by ÷ (Divide) at Number 13.
Official Charts celebrates 70 years
The ranking has been released to mark 70 years of the Official Albums Chart, which launched in 1956 and remains the UK’s definitive measure of album popularity across physical sales, downloads and streaming.
