Nickelback deliberately slowed down the recording process for their new album, Everything Under The Sun, with bassist Mike Kroeger saying the band wanted to focus on making the best record possible rather than rushing to meet deadlines.
Speaking on the Loudwire Nights podcast, Kroeger explained that the Canadian rock band adopted a more relaxed approach to creating their latest studio album, which is due for release on 30 October 2026.
Nickelback wanted a more relaxed recording process
Kroeger said the band broke away from its usual album cycle, which typically saw Nickelback move straight from touring into the recording studio.
He explained:
“The genesis of this thing was to kind of relax and take our time getting to it and getting it done. We didn’t do anything in a particular hurry. We just didn’t feel as urgent about getting it done as maybe we have in the past.
It’s been a cycle, really tight for us. We make a record, go on the road, immediately as soon as we get off the road, get in the studio.
This time was a little bit different and more of a relaxed pace. Just trying to do the best work we can and not so concerned with hitting timelines.”
The result is Everything Under The Sun, Nickelback’s latest studio album and their first since taking additional time between releases.
Band says extra time benefited both fans and music
Kroeger said the band intentionally extended the gap between albums after noticing how fans responded during the enforced break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said:
“You could say we took an extra year between albums. We just kind of wanted to leave some space. We found that we had a pretty good result of that during COVID, we went away for a little while and our people reacted really well to a little bit of a reduced diet of us.”
The bassist suggested the longer break helped create anticipation while allowing the band to develop the new material without pressure.
John 5 features on new single Rattle The Cage
The first single from Everything Under The Sun is “Rattle the Cage”, which features a guest appearance from guitarist John 5.
According to Kroeger, the song had existed for some time before the collaboration helped give it a fresh direction.
He said:
“We kind of wanted to push the limits and see what we can get and John 5 is a good example of reaching out and just saying, ‘Hey, we like what you do a lot and we have a lot of mutual friends.
He agreed to do it and it was just a tremendous experience to be able to have him on one of our tracks and also to see him cook was pretty cool.”
