Beyoncé has celebrated her birthday with an expanded and fully remastered 20th anniversary edition of B’Day, featuring previously unreleased music, new Latin collaborations, remastered 4K videos and rare archive material.
Originally released on 4 September 2006, B’Day arrived with Beyoncé at the centre of the creative process at just 25 years old. The ambitious second solo album was recorded in only two weeks and became one of the defining releases of her early career.
The new anniversary collection expands the original album with Spanish-language recordings, previously unreleased tracks, B-sides, new mixes and restored visual material.
Beyoncé revisits B’Day 20 years later
B’Day originally featured two appearances from JAY-Z, while deluxe and international editions expanded the guest list to include UGK’s Bun B, Slim Thug, Shakira and Alejandro Fernández.
The anniversary edition adds another layer to the album’s history with a series of Spanish-language recordings.
Beyoncé joins Colombian star Maluma on “Cuerpo Tumbao (Get Me Bodied)”, which samples Celia Cruz’s “La Negra Tiene Tumbao” as a tribute to the Cuban singer’s pride and defiance.
She also appears with Selena on “Irreemplazable (Como La Flor)”, a collaboration made possible through approval from the late Texas singer’s estate.
Beyoncé adds previously unreleased B’Day material
The expanded release includes several tracks that have never previously appeared as part of the album’s main editions.
Among them are “Can I Watch You” featuring Pharrell and “My First Time”, a recording originally made for Beyoncé’s 2003 debut solo album Dangerously in Love.
The anniversary collection also brings back B-sides including “Lost Yo Mind”, “Creole” and “Back Up”.
The digital deluxe edition contains 31 tracks, while physical releases include standard and deluxe vinyl and CD editions.
The Deluxe Vinyl version comes as a four-LP Bayou Blue edition with a 60-page booklet and art prints.
Beyoncé explains the sound of B’Day
Looking back at the creative direction behind B’Day, Beyoncé said she wanted the record to combine live instrumentation, R&B songwriting and hip-hop production.
“I wanted the album to be big, percussive, hard, up-tempo, and energised, and it was important to me that we used live instrumentation.”
She added:
“Hip-hop was taking over at the time, but I was fighting to preserve the bridges, melodies, and harmonies that have always been at the heart of R’n’B. The goal was to blend those two worlds through the art of sampling.”
Beyoncé also highlighted her appreciation for stripped-back arrangements, while insisting that the low end had to hit hard.
“I loved the minimalism of a beautiful vocal arrangement over a simple drum loop or a classic guitar like ‘Irreplaceable’…but only if that 808 was banging underneath.”
B’Day videos remastered in 4K
The anniversary project also extends beyond the music.
The original 35mm footage from the B’Day era has been remastered and re-coloured in 4K, including the Sophie Muller-directed “Déjà Vu” video featuring JAY-Z.
Fans will also see previously unseen photographs taken in New Orleans during the city’s post-Katrina rebuilding period.
Beyoncé has longstanding family connections to the city and wanted the images to recognise New Orleans and its recovery.
