Liam Gallagher has sparked backlash among Beatles fans and Liverpool supporters after claiming Oasis “put The Beatles back on the map” while taking aim at critics of his band and Manchester City.
The Oasis frontman has long spoken about The Beatles’ influence on his music. He even named his son Lennon after the late John Lennon. But Gallagher’s latest comments have caused a fresh row, particularly given the long-standing football rivalry between Manchester and Liverpool.
Liam Gallagher takes aim at Liverpool fans
Gallagher made the comments on X while responding to Liverpudlians who had criticised Oasis and his beloved Manchester City.
“All these Scousers giving me and my band s, Oasis have done more for the city of Liverpool than they will ever do. Oasis put the Beatles back on the map which they no doubt directly profit from, ungrateful little sods MCFC LG x. (sic)”
The claim quickly attracted pushback from Beatles fans and Oasis listeners.
One X user replied:
“TBF Liam if it wasn’t for the Beatles you’d be working in Home Bargains..”
Another wrote:
“I like Oasis. However you’re not even a footnote compared to the Beatles.”
Gallagher’s suggestion that Oasis helped put The Beatles “back on the map” is particularly provocative given the Liverpool band’s enormous influence on Oasis and the wider Britpop generation.
Liam Gallagher has compared Oasis with The Beatles before
Gallagher has previously made similarly bold claims about Oasis’ music when discussing The Beatles.
In 2023, while talking about his upcoming collaboration with former Stone Roses guitarist John Squire, Gallagher described the resulting album as:
“It’s the best record since” Revolver.
When another follower called that a “big statement”, Gallagher doubled down on the comparison:
“What’s coming your way is bigger… I’m being humble, it p* all over it.”
The Gallagher and Squire album was eventually released in 2024, bringing together the Oasis singer and the former Stone Roses guitarist for a self-titled collaboration.
Gallagher has never been shy about The Beatles
Despite his latest comments, Gallagher’s admiration for The Beatles is well established.
The Liverpool group have been a major influence on Oasis, whose music and image were shaped in part by the bands and artists Gallagher and Noel Gallagher grew up listening to.
Gallagher has also repeatedly used The Beatles as the subject of his trademark humour.
One of his more memorable comments came when he joked:
“The Beatles could s* in my hand bag I’d still hide my polo mints in there.”
His latest remarks appear to continue that mix of Beatles admiration and provocation, but the claim that Oasis helped put The Beatles back on the map has inevitably touched a nerve with fans of the Liverpool band.
For now, Gallagher has once again managed to turn a comment about Oasis into a wider debate about The Beatles, Liverpool and the place of both bands in British music history.
