happell Roan has addressed online reaction to her red carpet outfit at the 2026 Grammy Awards, held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, defending the look after it sparked debate across social media.
The singer, born Kayleigh Amstutz, wore a custom Mugler dress and cape that appeared to be draped from nipple rings while arriving at the ceremony. The outfit quickly went viral, prompting commentary about its bold design.
Chappell Roan responds on Instagram
Posting on Instagram the following evening, Roan dismissed the backlash and questioned why the outfit caused such a stir.
“Giggling because I don’t even think this is THAT outrageous of an outfit,”
“The look’s actually so awesome and weird. I recommend just exercising your free will it’s really fun and silly.”
Outfit details and design inspiration
The look was created in collaboration with Mugler, with stylist Genesis Webb confirming the design was inspired by Manfred Thierry Mugler’s spring-summer 1998 couture collection. Webb revealed that Mugler designer Miguel Castro Freitas was responsible for bringing the concept to life.
Webb also clarified that the controversial elements were not what they appeared to be.
“This isn’t casual. They’re prosthetics, don’t take it down !!”
Make-up artist Sasha Glasser created the prosthetic nipple pasties and faux tattoos worn by Roan for the night.
Grammy night appearance and nominations
Roan served as a presenter during the ceremony, announcing Olivia Dean as the winner of Best New Artist. For the main event, she later changed into a tan chiffon Grecian-style gown.
She thanked the Recording Academy in a follow-up post:
“Thank you for having me @grammys and those who voted for me!!”
At the 2026 Grammys, Roan was nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for her single The Subway, but did not win in either category.
