Billie Eilish has revealed she’s working on a new project with legendary filmmaker James Cameron, and it’s already in production, with fans in Manchester unknowingly becoming part of it.
Speaking on stage at her Hit Me Hard and Soft tour date at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena, the 22-year-old Grammy and Oscar winner hinted at what sounds like an ambitious 3D film collaboration with the Titanic, Avatar and Aliens director.
“So you may have noticed that there are more cameras than usual in here,” Eilish told the crowd.
“Basically, I can’t say much about it but what I can say is that I’m working on something very, very special with somebody named James Cameron and it’s going to be in 3D.”
“These four shows here in Manchester, you and me are part of a thing that I am making with him. He’s in this audience somewhere, just saying.”
Cameron, who pioneered 3D cinematic technology with Avatar (2009) and its sequel Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), was reportedly in the venue during her announcement. While no title, release date or further detail was revealed, the presence of extensive filming equipment and multiple cameras suggests the project is already well underway.
Fans were also amused by Eilish’s warning that she would likely be wearing the same outfit for the next four days, an indication that the full Manchester run is being captured for continuity.
Eilish’s expanding filmography
This wouldn’t be Eilish’s first foray into film. In 2021, she starred in Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry, a raw documentary chronicling the creation of her debut album and rise to global fame. That same year, she followed up with Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles, a stylised concert film blending animation and live performance, available on Disney+.
Both projects pushed the boundaries of the traditional concert film format, and teaming up with Cameron suggests her next step will be even more visually ambitious.
The Hit Me Hard and Soft world tour continues
Eilish is currently in the middle of a major world tour supporting her third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, which was released in May 2024 to widespread critical acclaim. The album debuted at Number 1 in multiple territories, including the UK, where it topped the Official Albums Chart.
Following her Manchester residency, the tour moves on to Japan before returning to the US later this year. With speculation now mounting about the nature of the 3D project, fans are likely to keep a close eye on future tour dates for more clues and camera rigs.
