Breakout pop sensation Chappell Roan has opened up about the emotional moment she heard her hit single Good Luck, Babe! on the radio for the very first time, and the surprising reason she doesn’t usually listen to her own music.
The fast-rising star, whose real name is Kayleigh Amstutz, spoke candidly in a new interview with W Magazine about her journey from underground favourite to mainstream breakout, following the success of her 2023 debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess and the viral 2024 hit single Good Luck, Babe!
“I think it was in an Uber when I was on tour,” Roan recalled. “I heard Good Luck, Babe! I grabbed my friend’s hand and I was like, ‘Oh my f**king…’ But I didn’t scream. I don’t sing along with myself.”
For Chappell Roan, the moment was a major milestone — but it doesn’t mean she enjoys hearing her own tracks once they’ve been released.
“I never listen to my own music. If it’s out, I don’t want to hear it. I’ve heard it hundreds and hundreds of times,” she explained.
This confession aligns with what Roan recently shared on the Las Culturistas podcast, where she admitted that even she finds her hit single Good Luck, Babe! difficult to perform live.
“Bitch, I can’t even sing it,” she said with a laugh. “I cannot sing it in the original key in a set of songs. If I’m just doing it on its own, maybe. When people sing my songs, I’m just like, I feel bad… Thank you for trying, because I can’t even nail it.”
Roan’s honest and unfiltered take on her own fame and vocal challenges has only made her more relatable to fans. In March 2025, she dropped The Giver, her first new single since skyrocketing to fame, and it’s already gaining traction as a fan favourite.
