Dove Cameron Says She Opposed Releasing Singles Without An Album

Dove Cameron

Dove Cameron has revealed she strongly disagreed with her record label’s decision to release multiple singles without allowing her to put out a full album.

The singer and actor, known for her breakout role in Descendants and the viral hit Boyfriend, said she has rewritten her debut album several times after label executives repeatedly delayed its release.

Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron explained that a complete version of the album was finished in 2024 but was never approved for release.

Album rewritten multiple times after label strategy

Cameron began working on the project after releasing her 2023 EP Alchemical: Volume 1. By 2024 she had completed what she believed would be her debut album, but the project was reshaped when the label opted to release individual tracks instead.

“I have rewritten this album, I think, three times now. The album that I finished in 2024, so much of it was cannibalised to become singles, which, for me, I was very against.”

She added that the approach created tension with how she wanted to present her music to fans.

“It was what they had wanted, and it’s what we did. I was very big about not promoting singles with no project backing it. We need a project, otherwise there’s no trust between the fans. Finally, we got to a good place with that.”

Debut album now expected in 2026

Earlier in 2026, Cameron said her label finally approved plans to release her first full studio album.

The 30 year old artist said she is currently working on what she describes as the latest version of the record.

“I’m writing the latest version of it. It’s pretty much done.”

She added that the project now feels closer than ever to being released.

“I’m feeling hopeful. I think this feels different and new. I think it’s finally going to be the year.”

Label reportedly delayed the album for years

In a separate interview with Paper Magazine, Cameron said the album had been completed more than once but repeatedly failed to receive approval from label executives.

“The album has been done multiple times.”

She said she had spent a long period pushing for its release.

“They simply would not greenlight it,” despite her “begging”.

“An album’s worth of singles”

Cameron said the turning point came when she highlighted how many songs had already been released individually.

“Recently, I had flagged like, Hey, we’ve released so many f**king singles and you still won’t let me put out an album. I’ve released an album’s worth of singles.”

After raising the issue with her label, she said executives reconsidered their approach.

“And they were able to recontextualise that and go, oh, that’s fair, let’s do the album. That’s kind of what happened.”

If the project arrives in 2026 as expected, it will mark Cameron’s first full length album despite years of standalone singles since her solo music debut in 2019.
