Some songs just hit differently. Hideaway by De’Lacy did that the second it left the club floor and made its way to the charts.
By the time it appeared on Top Of The Pops on 31 August 1995, the track had already been tearing up underground clubs across the UK. And when Deep Dish got their hands on it, they didn’t tidy it up for radio. They stretched it out, gave it space, let the groove breathe, and somehow made it feel bigger without changing a note of what made it special.
Then there’s Rainie Lassiter. Her vocal is quiet power. Soulful, human, the kind of performance that makes you feel something even when the bass is pounding. It’s why this track doesn’t feel dated, even decades later.
And yes, it went mainstream. UK chart? Number 4. US dance chart? Number 1. DJs kept playing it long after it left the charts, because that’s the real test.
