Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ Hits One Billion Streams On Spotify

Katy Perry has officially joined the elite club of artists with multiple billion-stream hits, as Teenage Dream just crossed the one billion streams mark on Spotify. The shimmering 2010 single becomes her tenth track to reach the milestone, confirming the song’s place in the modern pop canon, and cementing Perry’s legacy as one of the most dominant chart forces of the 21st century.

“Teenage Dream” is the title track from Perry’s second studio album, released in August 2010. The song was co-written with Bonnie McKee, Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Benny Blanco, and is widely considered one of the defining pop singles of its era.

Perry’s 10 songs with over one billion streams on Spotify

With this latest achievement, Perry now has 10 tracks in the Spotify Billions Club:

  • “Dark Horse”
  • “Feels” (with Calvin Harris, Pharrell and Big Sean)
  • “Roar”
  • “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”
  • “Firework”
  • “The One That Got Away”
  • “Hot N Cold”
  • “I Kissed A Girl”
  • “California Gurls” (feat. Snoop Dogg)
  • “Teenage Dream”

This places Perry among a small group of pop artists with 10 or more tracks surpassing a billion streams on Spotify, joining the ranks of Taylor Swift, Drake, Rihanna and Justin Bieber.

A record-breaking pop album

Teenage Dream wasn’t just a commercial hit, it was a chart juggernaut. The album produced five No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100:

  • “California Gurls”
  • “Teenage Dream”
  • “Firework”
  • “E.T.”
  • “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”

A sixth, “Part of Me,” reached the top spot after being added to the album’s deluxe edition. Two other singles, “The One That Got Away” and “Wide Awake”, peaked at No. 3. That run tied Michael Jackson’s Bad for the most No. 1 hits from a single album, a record Perry still shares to this day.

The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 192,000 copies in its first week in the US, and later received Diamond certification from the RIAA for over 10 million units shipped. It also achieved multi-Platinum status in countries across Europe, Latin America and Asia.

A pop classic

“Teenage Dream” remains a high point in Katy Perry’s discography and continues to earn critical recognition. Writing for Stereogum in 2019, Tom Breihan gave the song a perfect score in his Number Ones retrospective series:

“It’s a magical lightning bolt of a track… the absolute pinnacle of that moment of gleaming, hyper-processed big-money pop music.”
Tom Breihan, Stereogum

In 2020, Metro (UK) described it as “still the perfect pop song” in a 10th anniversary feature, underscoring the track’s enduring impact on both pop culture and fans.

More than a decade later, Teenage Dream continues to resonate with listeners across generations and its latest streaming milestone proves it.
