Labrinth has declared he is “done” with the music industry in a blunt social media message that also criticised his record label and the HBO drama Euphoria.
The British singer, songwriter and producer shared the message via Instagram, posting a screenshot from his phone’s notes app that appeared to signal a break from the industry.
“I’M DONE WITH THIS INDUSTRY.
F*** COLUMBIA. DOUBLE F*** EUPHORIA. I’M OUT. THANK YOU AND GOOD NIGHT X.”
The 37 year old did not provide further explanation, leaving fans speculating about the reason behind the statement.
Recent album released via Columbia Records
The comments come only months after Labrinth released his latest studio album, Cosmic Opera: Act I, through Columbia Records in January.
Labrinth, born Timothy Lee McKenzie, built his reputation in the UK with early chart hits before expanding into film and television composition. In recent years, his work on Euphoria helped bring his music to a global audience.
Role in Euphoria soundtrack and score
Labrinth has been a central musical figure in the HBO series since its launch, composing original music and collaborating with members of the cast including Zendaya.
One of their best known collaborations, All For Us, closed the first season finale and later won an Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
Another track, I’m Tired, also featuring Zendaya, was used during a major storyline for her character Rue in the second season.
Labrinth’s music became closely associated with the show’s visual and emotional tone, helping define the series’ sonic identity. He also appeared briefly on screen in season two as a church singer.
The soundtrack produced other widely shared songs including the viral track Mount Everest.
Collaboration with Billie Eilish broadened the show’s musical reach
Among the most notable tracks connected to the series is Never Felt So Alone, which Labrinth later released in an alternate version featuring Billie Eilish. The collaboration helped extend the reach of the show’s music beyond its television audience.
Season Three approaching with Hans Zimmer involvement
Labrinth’s criticism of the series arrives shortly before the premiere of Euphoria season three, scheduled for 12 April.
The upcoming season will also feature music by Hans Zimmer, the Oscar winning composer known for scores including The Lion King, Inception and Dune.
When the collaboration was first announced, Labrinth expressed enthusiasm about working alongside the veteran composer.
“Another chapter in the Euphoria universe! So great to join Hans, one of my heroes in film score, and bring some new magic to this new season.”
Zimmer also praised Labrinth’s contribution to the series.
“Labrinth’s music has shaped the show’s identity and I’m looking forward to contributing to the ongoing story and helping shape this new season through music.”
At the time of writing, neither Labrinth nor representatives for Columbia Records or HBO have publicly clarified the reason behind the social media post.
