Lewis Capaldi Returns With Heartfelt New Single ‘Survive’ After Two-Year Hiatus

Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi has officially ended his two-year break from music with the release of a deeply personal new single titled Survive.

Released on Friday 27 June, the track marks Capaldi’s first new music since stepping away from the spotlight in 2023 to focus on his mental health and well-being. The new song is already generating buzz among fans, thanks to its raw emotion, introspective lyrics and strong echoes of the sound that made him a global star.

A song about survival, written from the heart

Co-written with RØMANS (the British songwriter and producer who also co-wrote Capaldi’s chart-topping 2019 hit Someone You Loved), Survive dives into themes of resilience, self-doubt and pushing through when life becomes overwhelming.

“Most nights I fear that I’m not enough / I’ve had my share of Monday mornings when I can’t get up / I swear to God I’ll survive, if it kills me to / I’m gonna get up and try, if it’s the last thing I’ll do”

The ballad lands as a powerful follow-up to Capaldi’s previous work, combining his trademark vulnerability with a renewed sense of emotional clarity.

Two years away from the spotlight

Capaldi’s return follows his decision in June 2023 to put his career on pause. At the time, he publicly shared that ongoing struggles with Tourette’s syndrome and anxiety had made it difficult to perform and maintain the pace of touring life.

In a statement posted online, he explained that he needed “to spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order”.

His decision came just days after a difficult and widely discussed set at Glastonbury 2023, where he visibly struggled to complete his performance on the Pyramid Stage. Fans responded with overwhelming support, many singing along to help him finish the show.

Billboards and clues before the release

In the days leading up to the new release, fans noticed billboard posters with lyrics from Survive appearing in key locations tied to Capaldi’s story. Posters popped up in his hometown of Glasgow, as well as in Castle Cary, a town near Glastonbury, where he made his final public performance before the hiatus.

These teasers hinted that new music was on the way and helped build momentum among his loyal fanbase.

A new chapter

Survive doesn’t just signal Capaldi’s return to music, it also feels like a personal statement of intent. Honest, emotionally charged and musically stripped back, it’s a reminder of what made him a breakout star in the first place.
