My Chemical Romance have hinted they could make their first new album in 15 years, with Gerard Way telling fans the band have “always really wanted to make another record”.
The rock band’s last studio album was 2010’s Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. Since reuniting in 2019, My Chemical Romance have released just one new song, 2022’s The Foundations of Decay.
Speaking during the band’s show at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday 12 September 2026, Gerard said My Chemical Romance hope they will be able to make another album.
“We hope that life allows us to do that.”
The 49-year-old singer also told the crowd that fans “deserve another record”, although he stressed that he does not know when it could happen.
“You guys, honestly, you guys kept us alive so long. You guys deserve another record, and we’d love to do that. I don’t know when it’ll be, but it’ll be awesome.”
My Chemical Romance want to make another record
My Chemical Romance’s return to the stage following their 2019 reunion eventually led to the release of The Foundations of Decay in May 2022.
The track was the band’s first new music since Danger Days and appeared to open the door to further material. However, Gerard explained that plans changed following the unexpected death of the band’s friend and collaborator Doug McKean.
McKean died from a brain haemorrhage in June 2022, aged 54, less than two months after The Foundations of Decay was released.
Gerard spoke emotionally about McKean during the San Antonio concert, describing him as his best friend.
“Doug was like, my best friend. Doug basically lived at our house… I was very excited after [the] Swarm [tour in] Europe.
“I came home, and I saw him. I missed him so badly. He just had to come in to pick something up… [He said,] ‘S***, I’m so sorry, man. I can’t stay.’
“And I’m just blabbing to him like, ‘I’m sorry, man. I know you gotta go.’ He goes, ‘No, it’s cool, man. I’ll see you next week.’
“And then he died.”
McKean had worked closely with My Chemical Romance across several projects, including The Black Parade and Danger Days. He also worked on Gerard’s solo album Hesitant Alien and produced The Foundations of Decay.

Gerard said the band had been excited by the response to The Foundations of Decay and had discussed continuing to make new music.
“You’re like, ‘F***! I’m so excited. We should probably make more songs. Decay was really awesome, let’s keep doing it!’
“And then stuff happens – life happens – but just know that we’ve kinda always really wanted to make another record, so.
“We hope that life allows us to do that.”
The comments represent the clearest indication yet that My Chemical Romance could eventually follow Danger Days with a fifth studio album.
There is currently no confirmed release date or recording schedule for a new My Chemical Romance album, with Gerard making clear that he does not know when another record could arrive.
My Chemical Romance announce Black Parade anniversary edition
The comments about a potential new album come shortly after My Chemical Romance announced a 20th anniversary edition of The Black Parade.
The landmark 2006 album will be revisited with new songs and new cover artwork by artist James Jean.
The Black Parade remains one of My Chemical Romance’s defining releases, featuring songs including “Welcome To The Black Parade”, “Famous Last Words”, “Teenagers” and “I Don’t Love You”.
The anniversary release gives fans new My Chemical Romance material while the band considers whether the next chapter could eventually become a full studio album.
