Nirvana will receive the Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV VMAs, with the grunge icons set to be honoured during the ceremony in Los Angeles on 27 September 2026.
The award recognises the band’s lasting influence on music, culture and MTV, more than three decades after Nirvana made their first appearance at the VMAs.
The announcement came on 9 September 2026, exactly 34 years after Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic performed “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Lithium” at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards.
Nirvana won Best New Artist and Best Alternative Video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit” at that ceremony.
Nirvana’s history with MTV
Nirvana’s relationship with MTV extended beyond their memorable 1992 VMAs performance.
In 1993, the band recorded their acclaimed MTV Unplugged in New York performance, which was released as a live album in November 1994, several months after Cobain’s death.
Cobain died by suicide in April 1994 at the age of 27.
The band’s influence has continued long after their brief period at the centre of the 1990s alternative rock movement, with songs including “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Come As You Are” remaining closely associated with the era.
MTV marked the anniversary of Nirvana’s 1992 VMAs appearance by announcing the Video Vanguard honour on social media.
“This day in 1992, Nirvana took to the VMAs stage for the first time – shaping music, culture, and MTV forever. Nirvana is our 2026 #VMAs Video Vanguard recipient!!! Join us as we celebrate Nirvana‘s incredible legacy on Sunday, September 27 on @CBStv, @MTV, and streaming on @ParamountPlus.”
Madonna leads 2026 MTV VMAs nominations
Madonna is among the leading names at this year’s MTV VMAs, with 11 nominations across her career and latest work.
The singer has won 19 competitive VMAs and became the first solo female artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award in 1986.
Her 2026 nominations include Artist of the Year, while she is also nominated for Video of the Year and Song of the Year for her collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, “Bring Your Love”.
Madonna also receives a Video of the Year nomination for Confessions II – The Film.
Taylor Swift follows with nine nominations and has the opportunity to become the most decorated artist in MTV VMA history. A single victory would move her beyond the current record.
Swift’s nominations include Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia”, as well as Artist of the Year and Best Pop.
Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter among top nominees
Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter have seven nominations each, while Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson each receive five.
LISA has four nominations, while Shakira, Tate McRae, GENER8ION and Yung Lean each earn three.
The Artist of the Year shortlist features Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Sabrina Carpenter, Morgan Wallen and Taylor Swift.
Nirvana’s Video Vanguard honour adds another major legacy moment to a ceremony dominated by some of today’s biggest pop artists.
When are the 2026 MTV VMAs?
The 2026 MTV VMAs will take place live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, 27 September 2026.
The ceremony will begin at 7:30pm ET / 4:30pm PT and will air live on CBS and MTV, while viewers in the United States can also stream the show on Paramount+.
Nirvana’s Video Vanguard Award will be one of the ceremony’s major moments, giving MTV the opportunity to celebrate a band whose relationship with the network helped define alternative music television in the 1990s.
