Profile: Wegz

About Wegz

Wegz is an Egyptian rapper, singer and songwriter whose sharp lyrics and magnetic stage presence have made him one of the leading figures in Arabic trap and hip-hop. Born Ahmed Ali in Alexandria in 1998, he’s credited with helping bring rap music to the mainstream in Egypt and the wider Arab world. His rise reflects a shift in regional music, where independent artists are speaking more directly to their generation’s frustrations, hopes and realities.

Musical style and influence

Wegz mixes drill, trap, hip-hop and North African rhythm, often delivered in Arabic with a heavy dose of street slang and coded cultural references. His beats are dark and restless, layered with autotuned vocals that switch between rap and melody. It’s a sound that’s modern but unmistakably local.

Lyrically, he deals with everything from social pressure and inequality to love and self-worth. He’s not interested in clean narratives or polished personas. His music is grounded in daily life, with all the contradictions that come with it.

Breakthrough and recognition

Wegz broke through in 2018 with Dorak Gai, a track that quickly went viral across Egypt’s underground rap scene. It wasn’t just a hit; it was a statement of intent. More singles followed, including Msh Fair, Al Bakht and Asyad El Soot, all of which cemented his position as a leader in the Arabic trap movement.

His 2021 track Al Bakht became a streaming phenomenon, with over 200 million views on YouTube and Spotify combined. He’s also performed to massive festival crowds and collaborated with major Arab and international producers, helping to open doors for Arabic rap far beyond its home market.

Wegz represented Egypt at the FIFA World Cup 2022 closing ceremony in Qatar, performing Ezz El Arab on a global stage; it was a moment that marked just how far regional rap had come.
