PSY’s Gangnam Style Becomes First K-Pop Music Video To Reach Six Billion YouTube Views

PSY - Gangnam Style

PSY has reached another landmark in music history after Gangnam Style became the first K-pop music video to surpass six billion views on YouTube.

The milestone comes almost 14 years after the video was uploaded, extending the South Korean star’s record as one of the platform’s most influential artists and highlighting the enduring global popularity of the 2012 hit.

Gangnam Style sets another YouTube record

Directed by Cho Soo-hyun, the Gangnam Style video became a worldwide phenomenon thanks to its memorable choreography, humour and infectious chorus.

The song peaked at Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2012 and became YouTube’s first-ever video to reach one billion views, paving the way for what is now known as the platform’s Billion Views Club.

With six billion views, it remains the most-watched K-pop music video in YouTube history.

A defining moment for K-Pop’s global rise

The success of Gangnam Style is widely regarded as a turning point for the global growth of K-pop.

PSY helped introduce Korean pop music to mainstream audiences around the world years before acts such as BTS, BLACKPINK, Stray Kids, SEVENTEEN and TWICE became international chart stars.

Since then, several K-pop videos have joined YouTube’s Billion Views Club, including BTS’ Dynamite and Butter, along with BLACKPINK’s How You Like That and Pink Venom.

PSY remains a major force in Korean music

Beyond his own recording career, PSY continues to play an influential role in South Korea’s music industry.

He founded the record label P Nation, which has worked with a number of leading Korean artists, and continues to headline his annual Summer Swag concert series, one of the country’s biggest live music events.

More than a decade after its release, Gangnam Style remains one of the most influential music videos ever made, with its latest YouTube milestone underlining its lasting impact on global pop culture.
