Shakira has recreated one of the internet’s most recognisable celebrity photos, nearly 30 years after the original image was taken in Colombia and later became a viral meme associated with the early days of MySpace.

The Colombian superstar shared the updated version on Instagram on Tuesday 3 August 2026, posting a near-identical pose at a desk with a computer and printer. The post quickly delighted fans who recognised the nostalgic reference.

Shakira revisits one of the internet’s favourite memes

Sharing the image with her millions of followers, Shakira captioned the post:

“I have a feeling I’ve seen this before. #letscreatetogether”

The new photo mirrors an image reportedly taken in 1997 at the newsroom of El Heraldo in Barranquilla, Colombia, during the early stages of her international career. The original showed the singer smiling while sitting at a desktop computer, long before social media became part of everyday life.

Over the years, the photograph has evolved into one of the internet’s most enduring memes.

Why the photo became a MySpace meme

Although MySpace did not launch until 2003, internet users adopted the image as a humorous representation of the social networking site’s heyday.

The meme has frequently been used to joke about classic MySpace moments, including customising profile pages, choosing a profile song, arranging a “Top 8” friends list and checking messages.

One popular version of the meme captioned the image:

“Https don’t lie.”

The joke references Shakira’s 2005 global hit Hips Don’t Lie.

Fans loved the updated version

The recreated image quickly attracted thousands of reactions from fans, many of whom praised the singer for embracing one of her longest-running internet jokes.

One fan wrote:

“Love, thanks for updating the meme.”

Another commented:

“HAHAHAHA THE BEST MEME OF ALL TIME.”

The timing coincides with renewed interest in MySpace

Shakira’s nostalgic post arrived as MySpace has returned to the cultural conversation following the release of the documentary Myspace, directed by Tommy Avallone.

The film explores the platform’s rise before Facebook and Instagram dominated social media and features current owners Chris and Tim Vanderhook, who acquired MySpace from News Corp in 2011.

In the documentary, Chris Vanderhook reveals that the company still intends to revive the once-dominant platform.

“We still own Myspace… and we are going to relaunch Myspace. We’re just waiting for the right time to do it.”

No timeline for the relaunch has been announced.
