Taylor Swift is now the most-awarded artist in MTV Video Music Awards history after winning the inaugural Artist Director prize at the 2026 ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday night. The win moved Swift past Beyoncé, with the singer reaching 31 VMAs after entering the ceremony tied with her on 30 awards.

Swift, 36, accepted the newly introduced Artist Director award at the Peacock Theater, thanking MTV for its long-standing support of music videos and the fans who have followed her work.
“I want to say thank you to MTV for giving this platform to music videos so long ago,” Taylor told the audience.
Swift also revealed that she has personally written and directed 18 of the roughly 60 music videos released throughout her career.
“The main reason why I love writing and directing music videos so much is because you, the fans, make it so much fun,” Taylor said. “You make it so rewarding.”
The Artist Director prize was introduced at this year’s VMAs to recognise musical artists whose work behind the camera has contributed to the development of music video storytelling and direction.
Swift’s 2026 MTV VMA nominations
Swift arrived at the 2026 VMAs with 11 nominations across major categories, including Video of the Year and Artist of the Year.
Her nominations also included Best Pop, Best Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Choreography, Best Visual Effects, Best Album and Song of the Summer.
The Artist Director award ultimately gave Swift the additional VMA she needed to move ahead of Beyoncé and become the ceremony’s most-awarded artist.
