‘Tina Turner by Peter Lindbergh’: Taschen Releases Intimate Photo Book Of The Queen Of Rock

Tina Turner’s powerful legacy lives on in a new Taschen book celebrating her decades-long friendship with fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh.

Tina Turner by Peter Lindbergh is a striking visual tribute to one of music’s most enduring icons. Released by art book publisher Taschen, the 224-page volume showcases never-before-seen portraits taken by Lindbergh over the course of a 30-year creative partnership with the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. From fashion shoots and behind-the-scenes candids to private off-duty moments, the collection captures Turner in all her complexity: fierce, joyful, introverted, and utterly magnetic.

A creative bond that transcended photography

Their collaboration began in 1989, when Turner’s manager Roger Davies sent Lindbergh a fax inviting him to shoot the superstar in Paris for two weeks. What started as a routine assignment quickly evolved into a deep artistic bond and lifelong friendship.

“No shot was too outrageous for Peter,” Turner once said. “He knew that I was a bit of a tomboy, so we were partners in crime. He was willing to try anything – and so was I! Together, we made magic!”

Turner’s trust allowed Lindbergh to photograph her with rare intimacy. He captured sides of the singer rarely seen by the public, not just the stadium-filling superstar, but also the thoughtful, playful, and self-reflective woman behind the scenes.

“Sometimes I felt he could see into my soul,” Turner said. “He had a unique ability to capture all sides of me — the woman, the child, the prankster, the seeker, the true believer.”

Iconic moments and never-before-seen images

Highlights in the book include:

  • Turner dangling from the Eiffel Tower during the Foreign Affair album shoot
  • Unreleased outtakes from her 1996 Hanes commercial directed by Lindbergh
  • Turner laughing with her mother, Zelma Priscilla Bullock, in Deauville, France
  • Powerful portraits with designer Azzedine Alaïa, one of her most trusted collaborators
  • Still frames from the “Missing You” music video, filmed at Paramount Studios
  • Rare moments of anonymity — coffee on a Parisian street, lounging in casual clothes, smiling off-camera

Lindbergh, best known for his raw and natural style, famously rejected glamour in favour of authenticity. His signature black-and-white portraits stripped away the myth to reveal the person.

“Peter saw her as a work of art, a fashion and beauty icon, and most importantly, a joyous, powerful, and deeply spiritual woman,” writes Turner’s late husband Erwin Bach in the book’s foreword.

A lasting legacy

Tina Turner died in May 2023 at the age of 83. Lindbergh passed in 2019. Their shared work, however, remains alive through these unforgettable photographs — a permanent record of trust, vulnerability, and creative magic.

Tina Turner by Peter Lindbergh is available now via Taschen.
