Phoebe Bridgers has explained why her new album Lost Weekend took “forever” to make, saying her creative process came in bursts during her years away from solo music.
The 31-year-old singer, whose previous solo album was 2020’s Punisher, discussed the long gap during a recent fan Q&A following the release of Lost Weekend.
“I mean, I didn’t love all parts of being away.”
Bridgers said she repeatedly booked studio time before deciding to put the sessions on hold, eventually settling into a stop-start creative process.
“I kept booking studio time and then putting it off … and booking studio time and putting it off, and putting it off … I really wanted to be making something.”
She added:
“So I just started going in and then taking six months off and then going (back). So this album took forever. Which is great!”

Bridgers has previously spoken about how the COVID-19 lockdown affected her daily life and creativity.
In a 2020 interview with the BBC, she said she found leaving her home difficult during the early stages of the pandemic. She bought a treadmill and began focusing on keeping her home comfortable.
“I bought a treadmill, so I didn’t have to leave the house, and I [started] making my house cosy and making my bed every day, which I’m not super great at.”
She also joked about cleaning as a way of keeping busy:
“This is my only advice: if you live alone, clean your house the way you do when your crush is coming over.”
Bridgers has also previously spoken about experiencing imposter syndrome despite her success.
“I work really hard and I have impostor syndrome.”
