Natalie Imbruglia’s ‘Torn’ Finally Hits No.1 In The UK—28 Years After Its Release

Natalie Imbruglia’s 1997 hit ‘Torn’ has finally claimed the Number 1 spot in the UK; nearly three decades after its release.

Originally held off the top of the charts by Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’, Torn has now soared to the summit of a brand-new UK countdown: The Top 30 Most Played Songs of the 21st Century from the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, compiled by Greatest Hits Radio in collaboration with PPL.

The long-overdue recognition places Torn above enduring anthems like The Police’s Every Breath You Take and Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody in terms of radio airplay across the UK.

The chart was unveiled on Greatest Hits Radio during Kate Thornton’s afternoon show on Cash for Kids Day (1 May 2025), part of the network’s special Vinyl Revival programming.

“Natalie has finally had her revenge on Barbie Girl,” said host Kate Thornton.

“Torn has proved to be the true pick of the pops when it comes to broadcast longevity. Proof that the greatest hits of yesteryear continue to thrive today.”

Natalie Imbruglia reacts to her long-awaited No.1:

“I can’t believe ‘Torn’ has landed the Number 1 spot! Wow! Phil Thornalley—congrats to you my friend. Luckily I still love singing it! Thanks to all the listeners—see you at the summer shows!”

The song’s late-blooming victory is a testament to its timeless appeal and enduring popularity across radio playlists in the UK.

Behind the chart:

Kate Reilly, Chief Membership and People Officer at PPL, added:

“We’re delighted to support Greatest Hits Radio with this chart, which celebrates the most played songs of the 21st century. Expect a few surprises—this list is full of feel-good nostalgia.”
