Madonna and Charli XCX have joined forces for “Danceteria Afterhours”, a new reworking of Madonna’s Confessions II track “Danceteria”.
The collaboration marks the first official release from the two artists, bringing Charli’s contemporary pop sensibility together with Madonna’s connection to New York’s early club scene.
Produced by Madonna, Andrew Watt, Cirkut and Stuart Price, “Danceteria Afterhours” revisits the original track while drawing on the history of Danceteria, the New York nightclub that played an important role in Madonna’s early career.
Madonna and Charli XCX bring their club worlds together
The collaboration follows several months of public interaction between Madonna and Charli.
The pair hosted a CLUB CONFESSIONS party with Saint Laurent during Paris Fashion Week and appeared together at the brand’s menswear show, where they were seen sitting alongside each other, dancing and spending time behind the DJ booth.
Their growing friendship also fuelled speculation that they were working on music together.
“Danceteria Afterhours” is now available to stream, while three limited-edition three-track CD singles are also being released in US, UK and international editions.
The physical editions include the new Afterhours version alongside a Harry Romero remix and the original “Danceteria”.
Charli XCX previously addressed Madonna rumours
The collaboration also follows speculation about tension between the two artists.
Charli’s “Rock Music” includes the lyric “I think the dancefloor is dead”, which prompted some listeners to connect the line to Madonna’s dance-focused Confessions II era.
Madonna appeared to respond on social media with a message about playing the wrong music if a dancefloor feels dead, adding to speculation that the pair were trading comments.
Charli later clarified that the lyric was connected to her own relationship with Brat rather than a criticism of dance music.
She has also spoken about rejecting strict genre boundaries and described the current dance music landscape as active rather than stagnant.
The two artists subsequently appeared together in Paris, putting the speculation about their relationship into context.
Madonna returns to the MTV VMAs
“Danceteria Afterhours” arrives just days before Madonna returns to the MTV Video Music Awards.
Madonna will open the 2026 VMAs on Sunday 27 September in Los Angeles, marking her first performance at the ceremony in 23 years. Her previous VMA appearance was the 2003 opening performance with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
The 2026 show will be hosted by Snoop Dogg and broadcast live from Los Angeles.
Madonna is also the leading nominee at this year’s ceremony, with 13 nominations following the latest expansion of the awards’ nomination categories.
Her nominations include Video of the Year, Artist of the Year and Song of the Year.
The VMAs return with Madonna’s new music firmly at the centre of the weekend, with “Danceteria Afterhours” adding another collaboration to the Confessions II era.
