Bandcamp Bans AI-Generated Music To Protect Human Artists

Bandcamp has introduced a firm new policy banning music created entirely or largely with generative AI, reaffirming its commitment to human musicians.

The indie-focused platform, renowned for championing direct support between artists and fans, says the update ensures listeners can trust the music they find is crafted by real people, not algorithms. Bandcamp stressed that its mission has always been to support human creativity and preserve the cultural and emotional connection between musicians and their audiences.

“Bandcamp’s mission is to help spread the healing power of music by building a community where artists thrive through the direct support of their fans. We believe that the human connection found through music is a vital part of our society and culture, and that music is much more than a product to be consumed. It’s the result of a human cultural dialog stretching back before the written word,” the company said in a statement.

The new rules specifically prohibit tracks generated wholly or substantially by AI, with an extra focus on tools that mimic the voices, styles, or identities of real artists. Bandcamp says this kind of impersonation already breaches its existing policies on intellectual property and artist integrity.

To reinforce compliance, the platform is urging its community to report any uploads that appear AI-generated. Bandcamp reserves the right to remove content if there is reasonable suspicion that it was produced using generative tools rather than human musicianship.

The update highlights the growing tension in the music industry over AI. While generative tools offer new creative possibilities, platforms like Bandcamp are taking a clear stand on maintaining authenticity and protecting artists whose livelihoods depend on originality and genuine fan engagement.

This policy aligns with Bandcamp’s broader goal of ensuring the platform remains a space where musicians can earn a living, connect with listeners, and be celebrated for their unique creative voices.
