Dolly Parton‘s long-awaited stage production, Dolly: A True Original Musical, will make its Broadway debut on 7 December at New York’s St. James Theatre, with its official opening night scheduled for 19 January 2027, the country music legend’s 81st birthday.

The production tells the story of Parton’s extraordinary life and career, combining brand-new songs with some of her most beloved classics, including Jolene, 9 to 5, I Will Always Love You and Coat of Many Colors.

Dolly Parton celebrates Broadway debut with milestone opening

The Broadway dates were confirmed by Parton and the show’s producers, marking the next chapter for a musical that premiered in Nashville last year.

Parton said:

“My whole life has been a musical.

“A grand ole opera really and I can’t wait to present it to you on Broadway. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I’ve enjoyed livin’ it.”

What is Dolly: A True Original Musical about?

The production follows Parton’s journey from her childhood in rural Tennessee to becoming one of country music’s most celebrated artists and songwriters.

Alongside newly written material, audiences can expect performances of many of her signature songs, including:

  • Jolene
  • 9 to 5
  • I Will Always Love You
  • Coat of Many Colors

The musical first premiered at Nashville’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, close to Parton’s hometown, following several years of development after she first announced the project in 2024.

Broadway production led by Tony Award-winning director

The Broadway production is directed by Bartlett Sher, the nine-time Tony Award nominee who won Best Direction of a Musical in 2008. Casting for the Broadway run has not yet been revealed.

Reflecting on the response to the Nashville premiere, Sher said:

“During our world premiere in Nashville, I was overwhelmed by the deep connection audiences have with Dolly.

“You mention her name and people light up and share a time that she has inspired them and brought them joy. But despite all of that genuine love, Dolly has never really shared her story before.”

He added:

“She’s offered glimpses and peeks, but this musical allows her to reveal the unfiltered story in her own words.

“As we prepare to come to Broadway, we’re thrilled to show that rhinestones were never her whole story.”

The Broadway premiere is expected to be one of the biggest theatre openings of the 2026-27 season, celebrating the life and legacy of one of country music’s most influential artists.
