The Empire State Building was lit green on Thursday, 20 August 2026, as mysterious “TS” symbols appeared online and sparked speculation among Taylor Swift fans about a possible new project.

The New York landmark’s official X account posted a photograph of the building glowing green with the caption “WhaTS happening?”, with the capitalised “TS” prompting fans to connect the message to Swift.

Earlier that day, a bright green TS logo had appeared on a black wall at an undisclosed location. Fan accounts subsequently shared photographs of the symbol, with more versions reportedly appearing in other unidentified locations across multiple cities.

No official Taylor Swift announcement has been made confirming what the symbols represent.

Taylor Swift fans spot a new TS logo

The mysterious logo has quickly become a talking point among Swift’s fanbase, particularly because its design does not appear to match the branding of her previous albums.

Some fans have connected the green and black colour scheme to Reputation, Swift’s 2017 album, which prominently featured snake imagery.

One fan described the design as “giving snake”, while another suggested it looked like a combination of Swift’s debut-era aesthetic and Reputation.

Other fans have speculated that the imagery could signal an entirely new Taylor Swift era.

At this stage, however, there is no confirmation that the symbols are connected to a new album, re-recording or other project.

Is Taylor Swift teasing Reputation (Taylor’s Version)?

Swift has re-recorded four of her first six albums since beginning her re-recording project in 2021.

The two remaining albums are her 2006 self-titled debut and Reputation.

That has made the appearance of a green and black TS symbol particularly interesting to fans who have been waiting for Reputation (Taylor’s Version).

The original Reputation era used a dark visual identity and featured prominent snake imagery, making the latest symbols an obvious source of speculation.

However, the logo itself has not been officially identified as Reputation (Taylor’s Version) branding, and there is currently no confirmed release date for the re-recorded album.

Empire State Building has a history with Taylor Swift

The Empire State Building has previously been used to mark major Taylor Swift moments.

The landmark was lit orange in August 2025 in connection with The Life of a Showgirl.

It also turned blue in July 2026 following Swift’s wedding to Travis Kelce.

The latest green illumination, combined with the unusual “WhaTS happening?” caption, has therefore given fans another reason to look closely at the building’s social media activity.

The capitalised letters in “WhaTS” are particularly notable because they form “TS”, Swift’s initials.

Taylor Swift knows her fans are detectives

Swift has previously acknowledged the intense level of analysis that surrounds her music and lyrics.

The singer is well known for drawing on personal experiences in her songwriting, and fans frequently attempt to identify the people, events and relationships referenced in individual songs.

In an interview with New York Magazine, Swift said some of that detective work can go too far.

“There’s corners of my fanbase that are going to take things to a really extreme place.

“There’s nothing that I can do about that. There’s people who are going to try to like, do detective work, figure out the details – who is that about? What is this?

“When it gets a little bit weird for me is when people act like it’s sort of like a paternity test. Like: ‘This song’s about this person.’ Because I’m like: ‘That dude didn’t write the song. I did’.”

Swift has also said she does not allow outside interpretations to determine how she feels about her own work.

“You have to hold tight to your perception of your art and your relationship with it, and then you just have to [think]: ‘There it goes, hope you like it! If you don’t now, hope you do in five years! And if you never do, then I was doing it for me anyway’.”

What does the green TS symbol mean?

For now, the answer remains unclear.

The combination of the Empire State Building’s green lighting, the “WhaTS happening?” message and the appearance of matching TS symbols has clearly encouraged speculation, but none of the imagery has been officially confirmed as a Taylor Swift announcement.
