A 30ft mural of Freddie Mercury has been unveiled at Wembley Park in London to mark what would have been the Queen frontman’s 80th birthday on Saturday 5 September 2026.
Titled I’m Mr. Mercury, the large-scale artwork has been created by British street artist Frank Styles and covers all 58 steps of Wembley Park’s Spanish Steps, which connect OVO Arena Wembley with Wembley Stadium.
The installation is free to view 24 hours a day and will remain in place until December 2026.
Freddie Mercury mural transforms Wembley Park
I’m Mr. Mercury is designed as an anamorphic artwork, meaning the full image can only be seen correctly from a specific viewpoint.
Styles created the mural as four separate artworks before composing them into one large image across the 58 Spanish Steps. A yellow circle on the ground opposite the steps marks the spot where visitors can see the complete 30ft portrait.
The mural combines a monochromatic portrait of Mercury with colourful graphic elements and a symmetrical koi carp design.
The koi carp reflects Mercury’s lifelong affection for Japan and references the Japanese garden and pond at his London home.
The artwork also features winged female figures representing Mercury’s Virgo star sign. The singer incorporated the same motif into Queen’s crest, which he designed by combining the zodiac signs of the four band members.
Selected lyrics from Mercury’s songs and quotations from the singer are also incorporated into the steps, creating a visual route towards Wembley Stadium.
Frank Styles pays tribute to Freddie Mercury
Styles said the project allowed him to explore Mercury’s attention to visual detail as well as his music.
“It’s been an honour to once again work with Wembley Park to deliver this tribute to the one and only, Freddie Mercury.”
The artist added:
“As a trained graphic designer himself, Freddie was very aware and precise about the visual feel and so I have endeavoured to follow his ethos in the conscious creation of this mural.”
Queen’s Wembley connection
The mural’s location has particular significance because of Queen’s long association with Wembley.
Freddie Mercury and Queen performed several major shows at Wembley Stadium, including their historic appearance at Live Aid in July 1985.
The Spanish Steps provide a direct pedestrian route between Wembley Stadium and OVO Arena Wembley, making the location a fitting setting for a public tribute to the singer.
Jim Beach, Queen’s longtime manager and co-founder of the Mercury Phoenix Trust alongside Brian May and Roger Taylor, said the mural reflects a side of Mercury that existed away from the stage.
“Freddie was known to millions around the world as the frontman of Queen but off stage, he was a quiet and humble man, happy at home surrounded by the things he loved most.”
Beach added:
“‘I’m Mr. Mercury’ perfectly captures the beautiful complexity of Freddie, with his captivating portrait drawing people into his world as he did so magically during his life.”
When can you see the Freddie Mercury mural?
The I’m Mr. Mercury installation is at Wembley Park’s Spanish Steps in London and is free to visit 24 hours a day.
It will remain on display until December 2026.
Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar on 5 September 1946. He died in November 1991 at the age of 45.
The Wembley mural arrives as fans continue to celebrate the Queen singer’s legacy, more than three decades after his death.
