Patti Smith To Mark 50 Years of Horses With Anniversary Reissue Featuring Unreleased Tracks

Patti Smith will celebrate the 50th anniversary of her groundbreaking 1975 debut album Horses with a major reissue, arriving October 10. The release includes four previously unreleased recordings alongside demos and alternate takes that shine new light on her earliest work.

Four songs finally see the light of day

The reissue includes the first official release of Distant Fingers, The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game, We Three, and Snowball. The latter track has already been made available to stream ahead of the full set.

The expanded edition also features alternate takes of Kimberly, Birdland, and Break It Up, plus RCA demo versions of Gloria: In Excelsis Deo and Redondo Beach. These demos were originally submitted to the label in 1975, shortly before Smith recorded the final album with producer John Cale.

The 50th anniversary edition will be released as a two-LP set and a two-CD package.

Full album tour announced

Alongside the reissue, Smith will embark on the Horses 50th Anniversary Tour across Europe, the UK, and the United States. Each show will see her perform the album in full, joined by two members of the original Patti Smith Group, guitarist Lenny Kaye and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty.

They will be joined by longtime collaborator Tony Shanahan on keyboards and bass, as well as guitarist Jackson Smith. Among the scheduled venues is the London Palladium, where Smith will mark the album’s milestone in October.

New memoir Bread of Angels due in November

Smith has also announced a new book, Bread of Angels, arriving November 4. The memoir focuses on her teenage years and early creative work, and will also reflect on her marriage to the late MC5 guitarist Fred “Sonic” Smith.
