Chaka Khan And Kelly Rowland Honoured At 2026 Black Women In Music Event

Music legends, industry executives and cultural leaders gathered in Los Angeles as the second annual Black Women in Music dinner celebrated the achievements of Black women shaping the music industry.

Among this year’s honourees were singer-songwriters Chaka Khan and Kelly Rowland, alongside acclaimed choreographer Fatima Robinson, music executive Natina Nimene, Billboard editorial director Gail Mitchell and Gender Amplified founder Ebonie Smith.

The event was created to recognise and celebrate the Black women who continue to influence, support and protect the music business both on stage and behind the scenes.

Chaka Khan celebrates unity and empowerment

Accepting her honour, Chaka Khan reflected on the importance of community and self-belief among Black women.

“I don’t know how long we’ve been trying to pull it together, but I think that Black women finally found the beauty within ourselves and each other.

“I feel so overwhelmed right now, this evening, with high spirit.”

The Grammy-winning singer was one of the headline recipients during an evening focused on recognising achievement, leadership and cultural impact.

Tina Knowles pays emotional tribute to Kelly Rowland

One of the night’s most heartfelt moments came when Kelly Rowland received her award from Tina Knowles.

The businesswoman and mother of Beyoncé praised Rowland’s achievements both professionally and personally.

“Kelly, you are a rare gem.

“You’re a superstar in every sense of the word, and you are also the best wife, mother, sister, friend and daughter anyone can ask for.”

Rowland has enjoyed a career spanning more than two decades, first rising to global fame as a member of Destiny’s Child before establishing herself as a successful solo artist, television personality and entrepreneur.

Event celebrates Black women across the music industry

The Black Women in Music dinner was produced by Connie Orlando, Executive Vice President of BET, who described the gathering as an important space for recognition, support and legacy-building.

“This gathering is the living answer to a prayer.

“We are here to support one another, protect our presence, and build a legacy of love that lights the way for the girls coming behind us.”

Orlando also highlighted the challenges many Black women continue to face within the industry.

“As Black women, we are constantly asked to labour and be the backbone, often while our own wellbeing is ignored.

“We live in a climate that tries to minimise our power and rewrite our truth.”

Music, performance and celebration

The evening combined awards presentations with live performances from singers Chanté Moore and David Michael Wyatt, as well as violinist Yuli.

Comedian Zainab Johnson served as host for the event, which brought together artists, executives and industry professionals from across the entertainment world.
