James Bourne Reveals New Album After Health Battle Forced Busted Tour Exit

James Bourne Busted

James Bourne has announced the release of Murder At The Gates, a new concept album more than 13 years in the making, following a period of serious health challenges that forced him to step away from touring.

The Busted founding member withdrew from the band’s Busted Vs McFly tour in September 2025 due to an undisclosed medical condition. Now, the 42-year-old singer-songwriter has spoken publicly about the project he was determined to finish despite fears he might never complete it.

James Bourne’s new album arrives after 13 years of work

Murder At The Gates will be released on 1 July and features music from a new musical created by Bourne and playwright Steven Sater.

The album marks a significant milestone in Bourne’s career, not only because of its lengthy development process but also because it is the first record he has produced himself.

Speaking about the project, Bourne explained how important it was to see it through to completion.

“I didn’t want my health to stop me from promoting this project because I’ve put 13 years of my life into it.

“There was a fear of not finishing it. But I knew I had to finish it and give this to the people.

“There’s like a few people that have been waiting for it. There are hardcore fans who show to up for everything – and I have been speaking about this for a long time.

“It feels so good to now have this as a finished product. And it’s the first album I’ve ever produced. So I’m proud of it.”

Health setback led to unexpected creative opportunity

Bourne admitted that stepping away from touring ultimately gave him the time needed to complete the ambitious project.

The songwriter described the experience as finding a positive outcome during a difficult period.

“This album definitely has a different feeling to all the others.

“With everything going on with my health, I have been given the gift of time.

“I was given a lot of time back when I wasn’t touring. It was like turning a negative into a positive. It was such a shame to have to drop out from the tour, because I love touring so much.

“But you have to turn negative into positive. They’re the conversations I’ve had with my closest friends.

“I wanted to take the time I’d been given and deliver this album.”

The record also features guest vocals from actor Gaten Matarazzo, adding another dimension to the theatrical project.

James Bourne previously revealed major surgery plans

In April, Bourne shared a health update with fans, revealing that he was preparing to undergo major surgery.

At the time, he did not disclose the nature of his condition but expressed optimism about returning to music and touring.

“I realised it’s been about six months since I posted last. I have a plan in place to have a major surgery that should extend my life and hopefully make me well enough to come back to what I love the most which is touring and making music.

“It really sucks to be out of the game. But there is hope!”

No further details regarding the surgery or his diagnosis have been made public.
