Madonna has paid tribute to William Orbit, the acclaimed British producer behind her landmark 1998 album Ray of Light, following his death at the age of 69.
Orbit, whose real name was William Wainwright, died at his home on 23 July 2026, according to his family. His death was also reported by the BBC.

Writing on Instagram, Madonna reflected on the creative partnership that helped shape one of the most important albums of her career.
The singer described Orbit as a “genius” and “otherworldly”, recalling how his approach to music encouraged her to explore ideas she had not previously considered.
Madonna said Orbit effectively pressed a magic button inside her, creating the musical environment she needed to pursue new creative directions.
The producer’s influence was particularly significant during the making of Ray of Light, released in 1998.
How William Orbit transformed Ray Of Light
Orbit played a central role in the sound of Ray of Light, helping Madonna move into electronic dance music, ambient techno, trip-hop and other experimental territory.
The album became a major commercial and critical success, earning three Grammy Awards and establishing itself as one of the defining records of Madonna’s career.
In her tribute, Madonna recalled how Orbit gave her the freedom to approach both songwriting and singing differently.
She also connected his influence to a significant period in her personal life, which included the birth of her daughter, Lola. Orbit’s presence during that period became part of the meaning behind the album’s title for Madonna, with the producer serving as a metaphorical “ray of light”.
Orbit and Madonna continued working together
Their collaboration did not end with Ray of Light.
Orbit returned to work with Madonna on her 2000 album Music, another major success that incorporated electronic and dance influences.
He later contributed to her 2012 album MDNA, maintaining a creative relationship that spanned more than a decade.
Madonna also remembered the atmosphere of their recording sessions, describing a quiet, almost church-like environment in which she would wait for Orbit to develop new ideas on guitar or keyboards.
Their work together became one of the most influential producer-artist partnerships in Madonna’s catalogue.

Born in London, Orbit developed a reputation as a producer and remixer whose work crossed the boundaries between electronic music, pop and alternative rock.
Alongside Madonna, his credits included major artists such as Blur, Pink, U2, All Saints, Robbie Williams and Britney Spears.
His production and remix work helped bring electronic textures further into mainstream pop during the 1990s and 2000s, while his collaboration with Madonna on Ray of Light became the defining achievement of his career.
Orbit’s death has prompted tributes from across the music industry, with artists and fellow producers remembering his distinctive approach to production and his influence on modern pop.
