Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay has returned to one of the most iconic music videos of the 1990s, reimagining Virtual Insanity to mark its 30th anniversary. The new campaign, created in partnership with Beefeater 0.0%, revisits the groundbreaking visual that helped define the band’s global success while introducing a fresh concept built around moderation and city life.

Directed by Julien & Quentin and produced by Magna Studios, the project recreates the spirit of the original Virtual Insanity video using practical effects rather than computer-generated imagery or artificial intelligence.

Virtual Insanity returns 30 years later

Originally released in 1996, Virtual Insanity became one of the defining music videos of its generation. The video’s moving-room illusion and Jay Kay’s distinctive choreography helped it become a pop culture landmark, earning multiple MTV Video Music Awards and cementing Jamiroquai’s place in British music history.

The new version expands on the famous concept by taking Jay Kay beyond the original white room and into a series of interconnected spaces, with Beefeater 0.0% acting as the creative link between each scene.

Rather than moving the walls as in the original production, the filmmakers instead moved the floor, creating a fresh interpretation while paying tribute to Jonathan Glazer’s original direction.

Practical filmmaking takes centre stage

The production team deliberately avoided CGI and AI throughout the shoot, instead building nine physical sets and relying on in-camera choreography, practical set design and live performance to achieve the visual effects.

According to the production team, Jay Kay personally choreographed the performance, helping recreate the sense of movement and surprise that made the original video so memorable.

Campaign focuses on moderation

The campaign forms part of Beefeater 0.0%’s Get More With 0.0 initiative, promoting alcohol-free alternatives and the growing trend of moderation.

It also highlights “zebra striping”, the practice of alternating between alcoholic and alcohol-free drinks during social occasions.

According to Pernod Ricard, the partnership is designed to show that choosing a non-alcoholic option does not mean missing out on social experiences.

Jay Kay reflects on revisiting an iconic video

Jay Kay described returning to Virtual Insanity three decades later as a full-circle moment.

“This year marks the 30th anniversary of Virtual Insanity and as a prediction of the future it wasn’t too far off. Recreating the video with Beefeater 30 years on has been a genuine full-circle moment, showing fans they can get more out of this vibrant city with Beefeater 0.0%.”

Creative team pays tribute to the original

The directors behind the new campaign said recreating one of music’s most recognisable videos carried significant responsibility.

“When we first took on this project, we immediately felt the profound weight and legacy of Jonathan Glazer’s iconic original music video. It’s a masterpiece that fascinated an entire generation, including us, driven by Jay Kay’s undeniable flow and that legendary track. While stepping onto such sacred pop-culture ground was initially daunting, the opportunity to pay homage to this monument of music history, and offer a surprising modern sequel to it, was incredibly compelling.”

Francesco Ottaviano, Vice President of Marketing for Gins and Aperitifs at Pernod Ricard, said the collaboration aligns with the brand’s wider message.

“Beefeater 0.0% is all about encouraging fans to get more from every moment and enjoy a great-tasting alcohol-free choice for any occasion. Our partnership with Jamiroquai and the reimagining of such an iconic ’90s music video celebrates a fresh take on urban life, where moderation means you don’t miss out, you get more.”

Campaign launches across Europe

The campaign launches initially in Spain and Italy before expanding into other international markets. It is supported by social media content, influencer activity, bespoke bottles, behind-the-scenes footage and interactive digital experiences.
