Jay-Z is set to tell the story of his life and career in a new eight-part HBO documentary series, Jay-Z In 8, which will premiere this autumn.
The series will see the rapper, entrepreneur and music executive sit down with legendary producer Rick Rubin for an in-depth exploration of his music, lyrics, creative process and personal journey. Rubin also directs the documentary.
The pair have a long-standing creative relationship, having previously collaborated on the Grammy-winning track 99 Problems, which appeared on Jay-Z’s 2003 album The Black Album.

Jay-Z In 8 promises an extensive look at one of hip hop’s most influential figures, with Rubin leading conversations covering the evolution of Jay-Z’s songwriting, business ventures and decades-long impact on popular culture.
The documentary marks one of Jay-Z’s most comprehensive on-camera projects to date and arrives during a milestone period in his career.
Anniversary celebrations continue throughout 2026
The HBO series follows a busy year for Jay-Z, who has been celebrating landmark anniversaries for two of his most acclaimed albums.
The rapper recently announced a series of special performances marking 30 years since the release of Reasonable Doubt and 25 years of The Blueprint, two records widely regarded as defining moments in hip hop.
In May, Jay-Z returned to the stage as a headliner at Philadelphia’s Roots Picnic, performing songs spanning his extensive catalogue.
He is also scheduled to perform three anniversary concerts at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx, New York, this July.
One of hip hop’s most decorated artists
Jay-Z remains one of the most successful artists in music history, with 25 Grammy Awards to his name alongside a business empire spanning music, entertainment and investments.
He became the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017 and, four years later, became the first living solo hip hop artist to enter the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Outside of music, Jay-Z is married to global superstar Beyoncé, with the couple sharing two children.
