Sam Smith has announced their fifth studio album, Hazel Eyes, and released its lead single, My Guy.

The new album arrives on 21 August via Capitol Records UK and follows 2023’s Gloria. Alongside the announcement, Smith shared My Guy, a romantic new track that offers the first glimpse into the singer-songwriter’s latest chapter.

The 12-track record has been in development for more than three years and sees Smith taking a deeper creative role behind the scenes as a producer.

Sam Smith opens up about the making of Hazel Eyes

Speaking about the project, Smith described Hazel Eyes as one of the most personal records of their career.

“This album is an incredibly special record to me. I have been writing it for over three years with a very small group of beautiful, dear friends of mine.

This album is very personal, and I feel I have deepened myself as an artist through the making of it, through being a producer on the record, to walking alongside this record from the start to the finish and pushing myself at every single turn.

This record and this music is incredibly romantic. I’ve learned so many life lessons through making this album, and I’ve documented it all through the music.”

The album announcement was also accompanied by a message shared on Instagram, where Smith reflected on the themes behind the record.

“An honest account of my life the last few years, and a sweet escape for anyone who needs it.

I believe, after this record more than ever, that love is a cure and music is a sanctuary and honesty is my north star.

I can’t wait to share it with you all. Thanks for sticking round all these years to listen.”

New single My Guy leads the album campaign

The album’s first single, My Guy, centres on love and commitment, with Smith delivering one of their most direct romantic songs to date.

The track features the lyric:

“And like all good things, it caught me by surprise / You could dream he’s yours all you want, but he’s mine / He’s my guy.”

Discussing the song’s origins, Smith revealed it was a long-awaited moment in their songwriting journey.

“Written with beautiful friends on a summer’s day in New York, this one fell out of the sky.

In this sometimes cold and distant world, I hope you can feel the love and the closeness of this recording.

I tried to capture the glow and the warmth of love in this one, it makes me cry, maybe it will make you feel a little love too.”
