Lil Nas X has opened up about his mental health journey, revealing that he is “doing much better” after spending time in rehab and receiving a bipolar disorder diagnosis.
The Grammy Award-winning artist shared the update in an emotional Instagram video, marking his first major public statement since stepping away from social media last year. The singer, whose real name is Montero Hill, told fans he is now in a healthier place both personally and creatively.
Lil Nas X says he is feeling better
Addressing his followers directly, the 27-year-old explained that he had suspected he was living with bipolar disorder for several years but struggled to accept the diagnosis.
“I feel like I had known for like the past few years, but I didn’t want to admit to it because I didn’t want to have to take medication and, I don’t know, have people think different of me.”
The rapper added that concerns about how others might perceive him played a role in delaying treatment.
“I mean, I’m already black and gay, like, damn, God.
“Gay, bipolar, like I’m living life on extreme hard mode.”
Despite the joke, Hill stressed that he is now in a much more positive place.
“But on a serious note, I’m doing much better, I’m feeling better, I’m creating freely, and there’s less fear in my heart. I’m just smelling the roses.”
Update follows difficult year
The statement comes after a challenging period for the artist.
Last year, a mental health episode led to an arrest in Los Angeles. Earlier this year, a judge approved a mental health diversion programme rather than pursuing criminal charges, citing the incident as being out of character for the performer.
Since then, Lil Nas X has largely stayed out of the public eye while focusing on his recovery.
New music is on the way
Although he suggested he is not rushing back into the spotlight, the artist confirmed that fans can expect new music in the near future.
After reflecting on his recovery and thanking supporters, he teased upcoming projects.
“I’ve been doing music for seven years now. I wanted to let you guys know there is new music on the way.”
He also expressed gratitude to the fanbase that has supported him throughout his career and recent challenges.
“We’ve been through so much together. Thank you guys for holding me down.
“I love you and all I want to do is continue to try to make you proud and make myself proud.”
From Old Town Road to global stardom
Lil Nas X became one of music’s biggest breakout stars with the record-breaking hit Old Town Road, which spent a historic 19 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
He later cemented his status as a global pop star with songs including Montero (Call Me By Your Name) and earned widespread recognition for challenging conventions within mainstream pop and hip-hop.
