Britpop icons Pulp are the subject of a major new documentary, with streaming platform MUBI announcing Pulp: What Do You Do For An Encore? for release in autumn 2026.
Directed by filmmaker Garth Jennings, the feature-length documentary will explore the Sheffield band’s four-decade career, combining rare archival footage with performances captured during their recent world tour supporting More, Pulp’s first studio album in 24 years.
New Pulp documentary to premiere on MUBI
According to MUBI, the 90-minute film traces Pulp‘s journey from cult indie favourites to one of Britain’s most influential and culturally significant bands.
The documentary draws on previously unseen archive material spanning four decades and incorporates footage from what has been described as the band’s biggest-ever arena production.
Frontman Jarvis Cocker serves as narrator, guiding viewers through the band’s story while reflecting on the music, cultural impact and evolution of the group.
Inspired by classic concert films
MUBI says the documentary has been created in the tradition of influential concert films including Stop Making Sense and The Last Waltz.
Alongside archival footage and interviews, the film features a 20-song live performance showcasing many of Pulp’s best-known songs alongside deeper catalogue cuts.
The project aims to examine the band’s enduring appeal, from their rise during the Britpop explosion of the 1990s through to their modern-day revival and return to recording.
Garth Jennings reunites with Pulp
Director Garth Jennings brings a long history with the band to the project.
Jennings previously worked on live productions for Pulp’s tours and is also known for directing music videos for major artists including Blur and Radiohead.
Outside music, his film credits include The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and the commercially successful Sing franchise.
His existing creative relationship with Pulp is expected to provide a unique perspective on the band’s history and live performances.
Experienced production team behind the film
The documentary has been edited by Academy Award nominee Barney Pilling, whose previous credits include The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Production duties are shared by Octavia Peissel for Opal Films and Danny Gabai and Amy Rattray for VICE Studios.
Jarvis Cocker also serves as an executive producer on the project.
Pulp’s resurgence continues
The announcement arrives during a period of renewed momentum for Pulp following the release of More, their first studio album since 2001.
The band’s return introduced Pulp to a new generation of listeners while reaffirming their status as one of the defining acts of the Britpop era.
MUBI has not yet confirmed an exact premiere date, but Pulp: What Do You Do For An Encore? is scheduled to debut exclusively on the platform in autumn 2026.
