Roger Waters And Mona Miari Rework Comfortably Numb For Gaza With New Lyrics And Short Film

Roger Waters and Mona Miari

Roger Waters has collaborated with Palestinian singer-songwriter Mona Miari on a reworked version of Pink Floyd’s 1979 classic Comfortably Numb, reimagining the track as a politically charged tribute centred on Gaza. The new version was premiered at New York’s SVA Theatre alongside a short film and live performance.

The project introduces newly written lyrics from both artists and reframes one of rock’s most recognisable songs through a stripped-back arrangement and Middle Eastern musical influences.

A new interpretation of a Pink Floyd classic

Originally released on Pink Floyd’s landmark album The Wall, Comfortably Numb became one of the band’s most enduring tracks, known for its expansive production and iconic guitar solos. The song was originally written by Roger Waters and David Gilmour, with its themes often linked to emotional detachment and disconnection.

The reworked version, titled Comfortably Numb Re-Imagined, significantly departs from the original sound. Instead of the stadium-scale rock arrangement, the new recording features sparse acoustic instrumentation, Arabic vocal textures and regional melodic motifs.

Waters and Miari both contribute additional lyrics that shift the focus of the song towards contemporary political and humanitarian concerns.

New lyrics and narrative focus

Mona Miari’s contribution includes an Arabic passage titled Hind’s Lullaby, dedicated to six-year-old Hind Rajab, presented as an imagined dialogue between a child and her mother.

Roger Waters’ new verses reflect on memory, responsibility and the value of human life, extending the song’s original themes of alienation into a present-day context.

A reworked refrain appears throughout the track, reinforcing the message of emotional resistance to indifference:

“I will never become comfortably numb.”

The reinterpretation positions the song as a statement on empathy and awareness during the ongoing war in Gaza, using the structure of the original composition as a foundation for new lyrical perspectives.

Premiere at SVA Theatre with short film

The project premiered at the SVA Theatre in New York, where Waters and Miari unveiled both the new version of the song and an accompanying nine-minute short film.

The film was directed by David Barron and features footage shot in Gaza by Suhail Nassar. It was produced by Yasmin Almokhamad-Sarkisian and forms part of a wider multimedia release centred on the project.

The screening also included a live performance and discussion focused on music, censorship and the role of art in political expression.

Release and charitable support

The reworked track, Comfortably Numb Re-Imagined, is being released as part of a broader campaign, with all proceeds directed to humanitarian relief efforts for children affected by the conflict in Gaza through the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund.

Waters’ ongoing reworkings of classic material

Roger Waters, formerly of Pink Floyd, has increasingly revisited and reinterpreted material from his catalogue in recent years, often presenting updated arrangements that reflect current political themes and personal perspectives.

This latest collaboration with Miari continues that approach, using one of rock’s most recognisable songs as a framework for new artistic and lyrical interpretation.
