Dave Mason

Dave Mason, co-founder of Traffic, has died at the age of 79.

The English singer-songwriter and guitarist passed away on Sunday 19 April 2026, at his home in Carson Valley, Nevada, according to a statement released on Tuesday. No cause of death has been disclosed.

Dave Mason dies peacefully at home

A representative confirmed Mason died peacefully following a day spent at home with his family.

“On Sunday, April 19, after cooking an amazing dinner with his beloved wife Winifred, he sat down to take a nap with sweet Star (the maltese) at his feet,”

“He passed away peacefully, in his favorite chair, surrounded by the beautiful Carson Valley (in Nevada) that he loved so much. A storybook ending. On his own terms. Which is how he lived his life right up until the end.”

The statement also paid tribute to his legacy:

“He leaves a lasting imprint on the soundtrack of our lives and the hearts he has lifted. His legacy will be cherished forever,”

Traffic co-founder and songwriter behind classic hits

Born in Worcester, England in 1946, Mason rose to prominence in the late 1960s as a founding member of Traffic.

He wrote and performed some of the band’s most recognised songs, including “Feelin’ Alright?” and “Hole in My Shoe,” helping define the group’s early sound.

Mason’s relationship with the band was complex. He left after their 1967 debut album Mr Fantasy, returned for the 1968 self-titled follow-up, and then departed again shortly after.

Collaborations with rock legends

Outside of Traffic, Mason built a wide-ranging career, working with artists including George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac and The Rolling Stones.

He also wrote “Only You Know and I Know” for Delaney & Bonnie and scored a solo hit with “We Just Disagree” in 1977.
