Olivia Rodrigo Reveals Painful Two-Hour Photoshoot Behind New Album Cover

Olivia Rodrigo has revealed that creating the cover image for her new album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love was far more physically demanding than fans might expect.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the singer explained that she spent around two hours suspended on a swing to capture the striking image that now fronts her highly anticipated third studio album.

The album is scheduled for release on 12 June 2026.

Olivia Rodrigo says album cover shoot was “super painful”

The cover artwork shows Rodrigo soaring through the air on a swing while wearing a pink dress, creating one of the most visually distinctive images of her career so far.

But behind the finished photograph was a lengthy and uncomfortable shoot.

“I remember being a little frightened, my hands hurt really bad from holding onto the chain.

“I was on the swing for like two hours. There’s like a pillow under my butt, you can’t see it, it was super painful, but yeah, it turned into that (so I’m proud of it).”

Despite the discomfort, Rodrigo said she was pleased with the final result.

Why Olivia Rodrigo chose such a long album title

The singer also addressed the unusually lengthy title of her new record.

After releasing Sour in 2021 and Guts in 2023, both concise one-word album titles, Rodrigo admitted she wanted to move in a different direction.

The inspiration came from a conversation with longtime collaborator and producer Dan Nigro.

“I knew it wanted to break out of the four-letter thing and it was just something that my producer Dan said to me.

“We were having a conversation and about stuff in my life and he said, ‘You seem pretty down for a girl so in love.’ And when he said it, we were both like, ‘That’s it. That’s the title we’ve been searching for… for so long.'”

Robert Smith features on the new album

One of the most talked-about tracks on the album is What’s Wrong with Me, which features Robert Smith of The Cure.

Rodrigo has frequently cited The Cure as an influence, and she revealed that her father, Chris Rodrigo, is an especially devoted fan.

According to the singer, he has attended around 30 Cure concerts over the years.

“He got to talk to Robert, ’cause we’re kinda friends now, and the tears started welling up in his eyes.”

She added:

“His screensaver on his phone is a picture of him and Robert. It’s so sweet.”

Olivia Rodrigo enters a new chapter
