Sir Paul McCartney has added another milestone to one of the most celebrated careers in music history, securing his 24th UK Number 1 album with The Boys of Dungeon Lane.
The achievement extends McCartney’s record as the most successful albums artist in the history of the UK Official Charts. The album debuted at the top of the Official Albums Chart and also claimed the Number 1 positions on both the Official Vinyl Albums Chart and the Official Record Store Chart.
McCartney’s chart legacy reaches another landmark
The latest chart-topper adds to a remarkable catalogue of Number 1 albums spanning more than six decades.
Across his career, McCartney has achieved 15 UK Number 1 albums with The Beatles, two with Wings, one alongside his late wife Linda McCartney, and six as a solo artist.
The latest success means McCartney’s chart-topping run now stretches across seven decades, an achievement unmatched by any other albums act in Official Charts history.
Becca Monahan and Chris Austin, co-managing directors of the Official Charts Company, praised the achievement.
“Paul McCartney securing his 24th UK Number 1 album in the UK is an incredible achievement, and his place as the most successful albums artist in the history of the Official Charts is truly deserved.
“Across seven decades, Paul’s music has found new generations of fans, and this latest milestone is a testament to his extraordinary career.
“As we near the 70th anniversary of the Official Albums Chart on 22nd July, Paul’s continued success highlights his profound and sustained impact across the lifetime of the chart.
“Congratulations to Paul on another historic milestone.”
The Boys of Dungeon Lane tops multiple charts
In addition to reaching Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart, The Boys of Dungeon Lane proved particularly popular among vinyl buyers and independent record store customers.
The album finished the week as the UK’s best-selling vinyl release and the top-selling album across independent record shops, underlining the continued strength of McCartney’s appeal among both long-time fans and younger collectors.
McCartney reflects on decades of success
Despite his extraordinary achievements, McCartney recently admitted he remains surprised by the longevity of both The Beatles’ legacy and his solo career.
Speaking during a TikTok Live appearance, the 83-year-old reflected on the band’s early expectations.
“It is phenomenal, it is really phenomenal.
“When we started out we were just kids, and rock and roll was just really coming in, and we thought, ‘if we’re lucky, we’ve got a couple of years’ – that’s how long people normally lasted. They couldn’t really sustain much more after that.
“We expected maybe five years max, and then that became 10, and we were kind of still going and the scene’s still there. Then it became 20, then 30, and now it’s right up there. It’s great, it is a lovely feeling.”
