A biopic about Shania Twain’s life and career is officially in development at Sony Pictures, with filmmaker Leah McKendrick attached to direct and write the screenplay, according to Deadline reports published on Wednesday 3 May 2026.
The project is in early development, with plot details currently being kept under wraps.
Leah McKendrick set to lead Shania Twain biopic
Sony Pictures has tapped writer-director Leah McKendrick to bring Twain’s story to the big screen. McKendrick, who recently wrote and directed Voicemails for Isabelle, will take on both directing and screenwriting duties for the biopic.
The romantic comedy, starring Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson, is set to begin streaming on Netflix on 19 June.
Following confirmation of the biopic, McKendrick shared her reaction on Instagram, highlighting a long-standing personal connection to the country-pop icon.
“Long before I was making movies, I was shooting Shania music videos in my bedroom. This wild-hearted force of a woman means so much to me – and the world. It is a surreal dream come true to get to bring her trailblazing, gut-punching, awe-inspiring story to the screen (and ride horses and eat pasta in the process!) I am honored. I am humbled. I am READY. Let’s go, girls.”
Twain responded to the announcement with a simple heart emoji posted on social media.
Shania Twain’s career continues to expand on screen and stage
The biopic adds to a growing list of screen projects documenting Twain’s life and influence. She was previously the subject of the 2022 Netflix documentary Shania Twain: Not Just a Girl, which explored her rise to global stardom and impact on country and pop music.
Twain, 60, has also remained active in music and performance. She is currently promoting her seventh studio album, Little Miss Twain, scheduled for release on 24 July.
She is also set to open for Harry Styles during his 12-night residency at London’s Wembley Stadium, running from 12 June to 4 July.
Twain previously released her memoir From This Moment On in 2011, offering a personal account of her early life, career breakthroughs and challenges in the music industry.
